About Us

The artist/owner of Lone Star Forge is Paul Matthaus. He is a German immigrant who got his initial training in working with metals when he lived with a master blacksmith in Germany from ages fifteen to eighteen. Paul came to America when he was 31 years old and did blacksmith work out of an old dairy barn in the Atlanta, Georgia area.

In 1977 he moved to Texas from the East Coast to work. He had a full-time job and on the side he had a small blacksmith shop in which he created metalwork pieces. In 1984, he moved to Denton, Texas where he opened his business as Paul's Forge. He continued doing some commercial welding as well as creating artistic metal pieces in Denton. Besides being a workaholic, he is also is “very German” in that his business work area is, and always has been, extremely neat. Paul is one of those artists that pays loving attention to the details and his work is very precise.

In 2000, he decided to change his business name to Lone Star Forge and have an initial website developed. Another decision was made in 2002 to downsize his commercial location and move his business in 2003 to an old building that he remodeled in Ponder, Texas. One more change has been made as there are updated ways to offer his artistic pieces so that in the summer of 2006, Paul moved his business to a large building behind his house outside of Krum, Texas. This location has his work displayed there as well as some of his pieces are displayed in the Oxide Gallery in Denton, Texas.

His wife, Becky, is his staff. They have been married twenty years and make an effective team with whom you can enjoy doing business.
